Sorry for the length but this was just bad. I went to Classic Jack's with my friends tonight for their wing night. It's been awhile since I've been here and it's gone downhill.

To start, we had 6 people in our group so we had made a reservation 2 days before to make sure we got a spot in the restaurant area. We get there and the host proceeds to tell us there's no room for us there, even when we showed him the e-mail reminder we got about the reservation. He then stuck us at a bunch of sticky tables in the back lounge-y area. Fine, whatever.

One of my friends asked for a small sampler of this one overpriced beer so he'd know if it's worth it. Sure, they said. They failed to mention it'd be like $2 for it. We didn't know there was a charge until we got the bill. It's not the money that was the issue, it was the server not saying anything about it.

The wings tasted ok but they were dripping so much grease it was disgusting. I thought wing prices were equal regardless of what type you order. Not so here, where if you order one of four 'specialty' types (aka: flavored grease), you're charged an extra $1 per order. Again...the server didn't tell us this and we saw it on our bill. Really? Pretty lame. The crab and spinach dip was horrible. And the kicker was getting stuck with an automatic $23 tip for the bad service we had. Funny...their own advertising says that's only done for groups bigger than 6. Bigger than 6 starts at 7, geniuses. Just another gouge by a disappointing establishment.

Needless to say, we're not going there again.

Disappointed and nearly ready to give up on Calgary’s bismal late-night lounge bar scene, my partner recalled reading about a new pizza bistro in the 17th Ave precinct. Una Pizza + Wine stays open till late and was only a short walk for us from this night’s not-so-classy Stampede crowd near 4th Street. Una opened its kitchen early last year in the remodeled space of an old local pizza favorite, Wicked Wedge. Their focus geared toward high-end late-night food had not gone unnoticed with exciting reviews appearing in all of Calgary’s feature magazines and still fresh after a year and a half of operation.

Determined to quickly swing by and “just have a look”, we are greeted by the buzzing excitement of a more sophisticated and civilized crowd seeking their after-bar snack at Una. The space is bright with intriguing seating arrangements and a genuinely well put together feel. Immediately it is easy to recognize the relaxed atmosphere of like minded people enjoying good times with friends at this stylish lounge.

We are seated at the bar, amidst the activity and the thin threshold between service and serviced. Here you get close, very close to the action. The staff work quickly and professionally, dousing an equal amount of attention over their eager customers. The first impressive aspect is the switch to trademark Q Water, an in-house highly filtered water product which tastes clean and crisp and comes pouring endlessly for just $2 dollars a head. No plastic, no problem. There is even a Q Water beer-style tap behind the bar, still or sparkling.

The bar chairs are comfortable and allow great spacial placement among the chic decor and finely tuned lighting, the attention to detail in their interior is impeccable yet not stiff. My partner finds a very clever hidden away hook system located below the bar for hanging bags, this says something. The music is well chosen and plays through an iPad, a clever simple nod to modern gadgetry. Likewise, they provide free wifi and feed the table wait times through their twitter posts.

We came in for a nice glass of wine. Their wine list is sufficient and very well researched, here you will find viticulture maturity in their selections: Sauvignon Blanc from Malbourough and Pinot Noir from Martinborough, Shiraz from McLaren Vale and GSM from Barossa, Chardonnay from California and Gewurtz from BC; these people are clearly winos. But reading through the menu, we disregard having already eaten earlier in the evening and begin to salivate at the options before us.

We choose Shiraz from McLaren, maintaining a firm preference for big bold Aussie reds, knowing we will probably sample at least a starter. Here the standouts are the veal and pork meatballs, the seared scallops wrapped in prosciutto, the roasted fingerling potatoes, and the tasting of serrano ham. Before making our choice we are urged by our neighbours to try a pizza instead, their specialty, so we choose the roasted cremini mushroom pizza, with scamorza + grana padano cheese, fresh arugula and truffle oil. These guys are not shy with their arugula, it’s evident in most of the dishes you find when scanning the room. Good thing too since I love fresh rocket leaves.

The mushroom pizza is excellent. The base is crisp and bready, and deliberately not served with the customary tomato base. The tastes are threefold, the pepery arugula, the creamy yet spiky cheese, and the earthy smoky flavor of the cremini mushrooms highlighted by the truffle oil. The wine, well, how do you think they paired? Bellissimo!

We ate well past midnight and stayed well past one in the morning, activity still brewing but early signs of close starting to show around that time. Another group of people close by ordered the tasting of serrano ham, I couldn’t resist so I asked the skillful barman for a small taste and he joyfully obliged. It was divine, soft and smokey, almost like Proscioutto San Daniela. He possessed the good judgement and business maturity not to charge for the single slice, even though we would have happily paid for the pleasure.

Una Pizza + Wine have it down pat, the right product for the right market. They excel in delivering it in a stylish and contemporary way. It’s all the old good stuff but in a new good way, they speak the language of today’s more involved and better informed consumer. Needless to say our night got better, and satisfaction was now easily reached. It is rare when a small entrepreneurial venture can change the way you feel about an entire city. Una does this and paves the way for a new era in late night fine dining for Calgary, the only disappointment is that there aren’t more places like it...but time will change that thanks to people like this.

I agree with gastronmica chica.

My wife and I also used an online coupon deal for $40 of food.

First of all, when I called to book a table just in case they were busy and I asked about tables open for that evening, the guy on the line made it sound like he was flipping through several pages in a book to find tonights table reservations, hunh? Certainly, your book would be open to the current day....

His manner was "non-interested" he didn't seem to care about the fact that I am interested in trying his restaurant.

When we arrived at the location, we were a little surprised that it was a hole in the wall Mexican/Indian restaurant (La Casita and Wicked Chili).

I'm pretty sure that the owner tried this concept once before when he opened Wicked Chili/Green Papaya in Creekside (5 minutes from my home).

The papaya side died shortly after opening and Wicked Chili took the whole space. Sadly, the indian food was not good and now there is "Taste of India" where wicked/papaya used to be.

Back on topic.....

Service: fast but not to friendly

Ambiance: mexican music a little annoying after 10 minutes, not much effort put into decorations (paper snowflakes hanging on the walls) and the menu's......please....a plastic sheet protector you used for all those important high school papers.

Food: oh boy, chica had it right on. NO FLAVOUR!!!!! We ordered chorizo sausage and cheese for apps. No taste, dripping in grease. We ordered chicken quesedillas and enchilladas, also both no flavour. As well, and most surprising especially since there was an indian restaurant right next door, the food and almost no heat! No spice! No zip! No pep!

I would be ripping the owner a new one if my name had been Gordon Ramsay!!!!

We spent $41 of our $40 voucher and left feeling that needed to rush home to make a fresh berry smoothie to wash out the grease and get some flavour on our tongues.

Oh...and John Gilchrist, if your reading this, don't even bother going to this one.....

I had heard about this restuarant from a friend so i took it upon myself to bring a group of couples for a evening of dining. I thought that we were in for a great evening when we entered teh restaurant because it looks nice although there were many younger people hanging around the bar area making noise and drinking shooters. But i soon found out that we were going to be disappointed. Although it was not busy, the server was unattentive. he did not know much about wines and understood little about food pairing. i enjoy it when the server is able to make recommendations that work out but in this case the server horribly failed. There was also nothing special about teh food at all. It took a significant amount oftime for the food to come out of the kitchen and i recall having to ask the server for our food. Not a good thing. When it did eventually arrive it came out in batches so that in our group of 6 4 were served while the other 2 had to wait on theirs. I do not mind paying well for a good meal and wine but the prices in this restaurant are inflated for what you get. I would recommend not attending if you want a good meal but if you are looking for a fun place where there is a somewhat lively environment with young people mingling then you may want to try it out. Otherwise, do not!

My boyfriend and I bought a deal off living social and thought, how exciting, lets go have dinner ! We arrived at the restaurant at 7 PM and there were two other tables occupied. We were greeted immediately and asked to have a seat anywhere. The ambiance was strange, you first walk in to a split between a mexican restaurant and and indian restaurant. The inside was decorated in mexican fashion and they were playing some strange hip hop off of someone's ipod on a buffet table. Whatever.

Our server came and delivered menus, which after looking online at the menu, it contained half of the options. We ordered salsa and chips to start. I had to grab a napkin off another table, b/c ours didn't have any. Okay, then came our food. Our server went and grabbed some cutlery to place on the table and there was HAIR in the cutlery. She tried to pick out this LONG BLACK HAIR and failed miserably. So she went and got us new cutlery at a side table.

My boyfriend ordered the Chicken enchilladas, which looked really skimpy and were so bland. The "mexican" rice was horrible with dried up peas and carrots.

I ordered tacos with steak. As I was putting my cilantro on my skimpy steak mini tacos, I noticed that there was DEAD LADYBUGS in it ! OMG. first the hair and now this ? So, I reordered my meal, all the while thinking, I should have just throw my food at the wall and ran. I got the new meal and doctored it up with all the sauces and it was so gross. How does food have no flavor when you have salsa rojo, salsa verde, guacamole, onions, steak and cilantro on it ?? Weird. Plus, the meat was so tough, I couldn't even pull it apart with my fingers.

My boyfriend and I were so hungry we thought we would just eat. After dinner, we thought, let's order some deep fried Ice cream. So we asked our server and she said, we sold out. WHAT ? who sells out of that ? Seriously pissed at this point. Plus our server kept mentioning how sorry she was about the bugs in my food. BLECK. Then she offered us to have some rice pudding or some indian dessert that she didn't even know the name. I said no way and we got the bill and only spent $30 out of our $40 gift certificate.

Seriously the grossest mexican ever. I said that even Taco Time and Taco Bell are 100 times better. I've eaten at El Sombrero many many times, as well as Don Quiote and have had my fair share of mexican in the USA. THIS PLACE SUCKS AND SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN !!

2010 was the "Year of UNA", starting last January 22nd when two of us poked our noses in at the "industry" pre-opening night following the Bill Brooks' prostate benefit. Caryn's review of Feb.9th covered it. My only disappointment this year is that my frequency has dropped off as UNA's popularity has risen. Hats off to owners Jayme, Kelly, Steve and Gail for the Calgary restaurant success story of 2010 (Notable right behind ...).

This place is without a doubt the worst restaraunt I have been to EVER! The inside seems messy and un-clean and you are served your drinks in plastic child-like cups. The food was horrible! My food had a hair in it and another person's egg salad sandwich had a ridiculous amount of egg shells in it! The service was also nothing great. This might have not been a big deal if the food and everything else had been good, since it was brunch on the weekend which tends to be busy, but it was terrible so this only added to the awful experience. I will definently never go here again and I dislike it so much I won't even bother to try the other locations.

A cute little cheese shop on the opposite side from Farm on 17th Ave. Many different varieties of cheeses as well as different meat and spreads.
The best part though is the small sandwich cunter! They have 2 different grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu and then a third one which changes frequently. Very delicious! Made with fresh ingredients and different types of cheese paired very nicely with a meat or spread. The grill it for you when you order it and the sandwich is served with a delicious cucumber and celery coleslaw. I normally hate coleslaw but this is delicious! And pickles on the side! VERY responabley priced too. You can get it to go or to stay and sit at the small but nice counter they have against the window. Definently would reccomend and a place to stop for a quick bite if out on 17th! Or if you jsut feel like a delicious fresh sandwich!

Be careful of the shared platter! I went with a small group of friends over the weekend, and almost all of them were sick the next day. Our suspicions are on the "fresh" PEI mussels, which I thankfully did not eat.

As well, food took an unusually long time to come out. The sharing platter contains 4 different dishes, and there was a 15-20 minute wait between our plates being taken away and the next dish coming out. We would get our food, eat it, have the dishes taken away, and wait 15-20 minutes for the next dish to come. It felt like our food was getting bumped back to accommodate other tables. Needless to say, dinner took a long time and we were still hungry at the end. It would have been good if the dishes came out with better timing.

One last word of warning: they charge 18% gratuity for a party of SIX or more, not the usual 8. The food was good, and our server was very friendly... but it wasn't worth the amount of money we spent there. It's a better place to go for drinks, not meals.

Service - 3 - friendly wait staff, long food wait
Environment - 4 - nice atmosphere
Value - 2 - 18% gratuity for 6 people is pushing it
Food - 4 - minus the mussels, the rest of the dishes were very good

We had a casual, but quite enjoyable Saturday lunch here. The interior is bright, fresh, and warm, and the food exceeded our expectations. We had all of the daily features, a cheese plate, a meat plate, a pintroxs (small bite) and an appy order of meatballs to share between the 3 of us and a baby. They were all delicious, except we could probably do without the small bites which were BLT skewers, since they were really really small bites, perhaps just enough as a snack for my 18 mth old. We also shared a proscuitto pizza and meatball appetizer which was both very tasty. The meatballs had a wonderful sauce and the pizza was light and crispy. Dessert was good too. We would definitely come back and recommend friends to try it out. The price is a bit high for the actual amount of food you get, but it's still worthwhile overall.

UNA...is more than just ONE great idea, its the result of that perfect combination of 4 talented individuals coming together with their specific skill set and building a complete concept.

with industry peeps like these as owner operators you get spoiled with an eating experience where the food matches the style of service, the wine list, the decor and even the location in that thoughtful way we've come to appreciate the 'big city' pizza and wine bars.

think of the best slice of 'real' pizza you've ever had, take a sip of your fairly priced glass of red or the cold duvel, say hello to your friends as they too come and go, take another look at the menu for some more plates to share, try another glass of the featured wine, hear the room fill with great conversation, digest your feast with the perfect espresso....and you've just been at UNA

as any 'big city' pizza wine bar, make sure you 're not in a rush to seat as they don't take reservations and the others will have come before you...but with its late night hours why rush a good thing.

Here's the deal. It's a $10 steak sandwich on Tuesday and it's a real steak! Not the half inch thick dog chew that you find at other places. This is a thick juicy steak - the kind that you can find at an established steak house. There are also other lunch specials that change weekly that are a definite must! Also be sure to ask about their calendar.

Farm has different and unique food, all nicely paired with great cheeses. Be prepared to open your wallets, and the portions are small and prices are high. The creme brulee is the best in the city. They have a great cozy atmpsphere but the dining room is small and they dont take reservations.

This restaurant used to be a favorite and worth a drive to get takeout even after I left the neighborhood. A recent trip left me and my party very disappointed with the quality of food and service. There seems to have been a deterioration in the quality of food at this restaurant...the chicken was grisly (ALL of it), the charbroiled pork dish was soggy and the meat did not taste nor look like anything remotely charred or barbecued. The order was not complete with several items not included and overall this experience was a let down. Too bad...this used to be a great place!

My boyfriend and I visited Fiore the other evening - we live right off 17th and had pretty much exhausted all other restaurants so decided to give it a try - worst mistake EVER!!! I made better pasta than that when i was 5. The "chicken" is not chicken if it comes pre-cooked and pre-chopped from a vaccuum sealed package! watery - sufficiently draining pasta does help! Better sauces come form a jar so i can only assume that these came from a can and nothing was added to highten any flavor they possibly could have captured. I can't believe that you can throw some "trendy" crap on the walls, locate yourself on 17th Ave and call yourself a restaurant, Fiore should be ashamed of themselves and their "chefs". Wait staff is hit and miss, our waitress was a definite miss. Good luck if you have mediocre taste and no expectations - Fiore should suffice....

Good quality, light fare, I felt great after eating such a welcomed change after overeating at big chain restaurants!

We have dined at Fiore Cantina many, many times and every time it has been fantastic. The people we take with us agree. No one, not once has had a bad meal. That being said I cannot recommend the butternut squash. The prices are fantastic and they have smaller portions for those who cannot finish a full order. The 4 cheese ravioli is great! The buns to start the meal come warmed! The thin crust pizza is great too. We have ordered almost everything on the menu and are always thrilled with the food.

The pizza was horrible with a pre frozen crust and bland sauce (I had the sausage), and I've never had a great meal there. The service however is usually great and the patio in the summer is one of the best places in the city to sit and people watch.

We were looking forward to a Saturday night out of fine dining and fun with friends.....4 couples. We met in the bar area, where the service was great as were the appies. When we were ready to get seated for dinner we were told to walk over to the dining area to get seated...well we waited around for about 10 mins before we finally found a waiter to seat us. We ordered some wine and beer...slow service. We then asked ordered some bruschetta and our main meals.....half of us ordered steaks, mine was a 10oz NY Med/Rare.....the food arrived and I had a hard time cutting my steak with my butter knife, we had to ask for steak knives and also had to ask for water as it wasn't offered. Let me tell you, it was the worse steak I have had in a very long time......chewy and gristly....not what I expected for a $35 steak. The rest of the table's meals were mediocre and barely warm. In the end we didn't even get a "how was your meal?".....I guess who cares when you are being charged an automatic 18% gratuity for groups of 8 or more! We ended up in the bar area after which was buzzing...no room to move but good fun...my suggestion, shut down the restaurant if you can't improve the service and food and expand the bar!

Our waitress was great and the starter cheeses and meats really good. We both had potatoe asparagus soup and the cheddar cheese in it was so good we had to buy some. My main was a goat cheese grapefruit salad, which I LOVED! My husband however, had the quail and it was pretty icky. Rubbery and raw. Next time he'd go for the mac 'n cheese. The dessert menu was a bit of a disappointment so we went elsewhere for coffee and dessert.

I'm a fan of Moxies, the food is served quickly and efficiently. The staff is pleasant. Food is tasty and visually appealing. I was happy to see that this location received its well needed renovation. I wasn't a fan of the the 'Denny's' feel it had become. Just after the reno, I took a seat on the new larger patio with funky plastic couches and enjoyed the entertainment that is always afforded patrons on 17th Ave. Our meal was great (also one of the best Ceasar's in Calgary). The second time we went on a Thursday night on the bar side and enjoyed wine ($7 off on Thursdays) and a great appetizer. Not disappointed on either visit. However on Thursday the music was so loud that I suspected it was time to put my lip reading skills into play or just start nodding as I pretended to hear my dinner partner. 17th has a host of restaurants and this one is definitely worth the visit.

Been there once and likely never go back. From outside the restaurant you are easily fooled that it is a romantic place to bring someone. I went there with a date thinking just that. It was loud and very crowded. It was more of a fancy bar scene than a romantic restaurant. The food and service were good. Yet, with so many choices in the city I can think of better places to eat dinner with that special person.

I would also recomend the iced tea, they brew it themselves and sweeten it with honey and apple cider. I thought it was nice low prices nothing too over the top I believe our bill was 31.00$ thats two mains and two drinks. I am very happy and I will return again! thanks

I went to 1410 with a friend on a Monday night. The place was packed and I know why! First reason was probably the hockey game, and the other reason was definitely 1410's awesome specials! When was the last time you saw 9 cent wings? Other specials were $7 enchiladas (with 2 sides!!!!) and $4 coronas. The food was good, although they wouldn't mix wing flavors for my friend. I thought the coleslaw was really good and I didn't really need the other side of rice because the portions were very generous. The presentation and plates are also much classier than expected and a step above most pubs. Only complaints include a forgetful server and a really REALLY loud patron at the next table, but the latter wasn't at all 1410's fault. I recommend this place and look forward to trying more of the delicious sounding meals on the menu.

The Coup is a great place for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike as their food is so good, who needs meat? I highly recommend the falafel quesadilla with salad and maple balsamic dijon dressing. The only thing I've ate at the Coup that I wasn't totally thrilled with was the soba noodle salad, it was really overdressed. Make sure you get to The Coup early and keep your party to less than 4 because the place is super tiny (but lovely) and fills up very quickly.
