March 2011 - Our last night out west(after 5 days skiing in Banff) & we fill up the rental with gas at Hunterhorn Plaza. We drive into the plaza & find this perfect little Italian restaurant with lotsa amore in Calgary. The food was amazing, it tastes homemade! I hate the whole franchise food thingy, so predictably blah. Its really nice when U walk into an independently run place with lots of ambiance and great food. This experience was very rewarding. We're from Toronto and I'm sad that I can't come here once a week, because this place is worth it! You gotta eat here!

My buddy Ryan raves about the Holy Grill. He works pretty much next door and I'm not kidding when I say he could write out the menu. He's had it all a million times. We were downtown and decided to try it for lunch.
The Holy Grill is a basically a clean, nice diner. It's definitely not a greasy spoon. There are no servers. You order at the front when you walk in and when your order is ready they call your name. The place was filled with a well dressed lunch crowd who probably weren't there for the first time. The walls are covered with original art work (nice stuff too) by local artists. You can purchase the art work if you like and it changes on a regular basis.
My friend had me convinced to try a burger before I even walked in door, so I didn't really look at the menu. The lunch menu pretty much consists of burgers and paninis - my kind of place. Anytime I am in a place for the first time, I keep it simple and order the restaurants specialty in a simple form. I figure if they can do something simple and get it right, the rest of it will be great.
I was disappointed to see that when the burger came, the meat that was used was a frozen pattie, but there were two of them. Where I grew up in Nova Scotia, there is no shortage of family run, mom and pop style diners, greasy spoons, etc... and they wouldn't dare serve a frozen pattie style burger. I thought when I moved to Calgary, home of Alberta beef, I was in for a treat with all the great burgers I would be trying. I really am shocked how many places server frozen meat in this city. I've only found a handful that don't. I would have thought that by looking at this place, there is no way this would be the case. The burger was good and very filling, the highlight though was the fries. Probablly the best fries I've ever had in Calgary. My friend tells me that the sweet potato chips are awesome too, but these fries were so good that I'm not sure I could go there and not get them again.
Looking around the room it seemed that the percentage of people eating paninis to burgers was 75% to 25%. The panini's were popular and looked delicious. Next trip I'll be going that route for sure. I also here great things about their breakfast. I wouldn't expect anything less. Check out the Holy Grill.

This is a cute place. They have done alot right. It is a welcoming feel and the first person (K) that I met was so friendly. (if it wasn't lunch time we would probably still be talking). I also met the owner who quickly came out to see who and what I was all about.
The smell of the food is awesome and with only 8 tables this place is filling quickly. Everyone else in the area seems to know what I have been missing.
The haddock burger came on a fresh bun with nice greens, onion, pickles and tomato. The batter was delicately cooked to perfection and it was satisfying. I loved the home cut fries, there was just too many for me.
I will be back, but this time I will bring some friends with me. Thank you!

Really!? I had no idea that there were so many other delicious choices out there. I do so much shopping around now, that I definately need to add this to my rounds. Very knowledgable people.

Nice wine. Good service. Very boring salad ( something I would make at home on a weekday ). Salad had Feta Cheese but it didn't mention that it was goat feta.....Don't do goat!! Husbands curry dish was quite nice. Couldn't stop starring at BIG DIRTY MIRROR on the wall...ever heard of glass cleaner??

I took a date to the UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT Quincys, Ummm, except new table clothes nothing else seems new.
I ordered a 8 oz steak sandwich. Its not a sirloin. It tasted like some stewing beef off the grocery store.
My date ordered the foie gras burger. She is a professional chef. She said it tasted like some cheap stuff
with panko in it and the burger was burnt and it had the wrong cheese. I am sorry to find my self going
there again and again. I guess because of its location. too bad, some other genuinely good restaurants
closed down in the neighbourhood

Breakfast is not an easy thing to be creative with but I think they have done a good job of it; while keeping the portions reasonable.
I enjoyed trying alternatives to any meal and they have done a good job of being creative.
They serve real good coffee which is always important at breakfast!
If you are looking for the traditional breakfast stick to Ricki's, Denny's, and Phil's but if you actually want to try something a little more interesting check this spot out.

This restaurant delivers for food and beverage. The meals are worth every penny you pay.
I am not a wine drinker but those I have enjoyed this venue with have been pleased with the selection.
Service is freindly and casual, some are better than others but that is usually the case in any setting.

This is the best kept secret in town, but not really a secret- hard to get into but worth the wait.
You won't find a more passionate chef or staff - I can't wait to go back.

Have been there twice for Dinner and it is among the best out there. We have eaten at Rouge, QHaute,Theatro, Catch, etc etc, This restaurant is now our favorite. Has the best Prime Rib in all the city with mouth water Au Jus and shaved Horseradish, ( I hate HR but ate all of it). Recently had the tenderloin with parsnip puree , absolutely the best steak I have ever had, everything combines on your tongue and treats the palette. Apps are great, love the scallop w/romaine heart salad and the confit raviolli. Cant wait to try everything on the menu. Best thing is that Chef is right there for all to see in the kitchen, he takes pride and it shows. Will be our favorite as long as Chef stays front and centre. Do yourself a favor and make the trip to Notable restaurant. Only pet peeve, no refills on softdrinks (kids are thirsty).

The place is trendy enough and super clean. The staff were a little over the top and slightly annoying with the coffee refills every 20 seconds... No wonder! I sat at the table closest to the kitchen and for most of the time I was there the head chef was giving the girls major crap. No way to treat your staff in my opinion.
The food was ok... The vibe was TENSE and I wanted to get out of there.

I've heard a bit about this place, so I thought I would give it a go. They are quite basic and straight forward. Good burgers and fries. I thought the fries were outstanding! I will probably go back soon.

My husband and I ate here for our Aniversary. Neither of us were that impressed. I had the valentines day menu and my husband ordered off the regular menu. My pasta dish was really good but it's not on the regular menu. My main dish was not good, over cooked mushrooms and almost blue rare steak (I was not given a choice). The man next to us sent his fish back because it wasn't cooked. Doubt we will be back.

Food was great, service was good. Will go back in the future.

Took my girls to dinner here to celebrate since I'm not available to take them out on Monday night. We were there early so it was quiet and we had plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere. The calamari was gobbled up in no time, so that was obviously a hit.
My wife had the salmon pasta, that she really liked, it was just too much to finish. She was thankful that she didn't try some of the hot bread that came earlier.
I had the basa, which melted in my mouth and the blackening was just perfect. Everything was just perfect. If only my girls could eat more of the fabulous burgers that we ordered for them! Thank you Halo, for another nice meal!

Great little find in this neighborhood. I can't wait until more people find out about this. They are very knowledgable and eager to make good food.
Great muffins and brownies!
Gotta try it out if you are GF.

My friend Amy raved about Bumpy's Cafe to me years ago and how good the baked goods were. So I go to Bumpy's and ordered a soup and sandwich. Makes no sense, but it wouldn't be the first time that I would be accused of doing something that doesn't make sense. I was there at about 2:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon. Bumpy's is everything a little cafe should be. Nice atmosphere, artsy looking people working there, small and quaint, etc...
I asked the guy working there what panini he suggested and we decided upon the Rueben. It was pretty good. I ordered the half panini combo, which came with a cup of soup, and a choice of coleslaw or potato chips. I picked the carrot ginger soup (I'll soon be posting a stellar reciped for roasted carrot ginger soup). The soup was good but might have had a pinch too much ginger in it for my liking. I went with the coleslaw instead of the chips, because it looked appetizing, and it was.
Bumpy's was voted best espresso in Calgary, and from sitting down watching people come and go as I ate the meal, it really is about the coffee, so I'm thinking I have to go back for a coffee and a muffin next time. With a bottle of lemonade, the total cost for lunch was $10.75.

This was our first visit to Halo on a cold January nite. We were seated in front of the fire place and it couldn't of been a better table. My teenage children enjoyed the entire meal from app's to desert. The baby Yorkies were my fav. I can't think of anything bad to say, even a couple of little screw ups on the order were fixed as soon as we noticed. We will be back.

Worst customer service I have EVER experienced!!! After ordering a donair with lettuce, tomato and cheese, I was brought a donair with browning tomato and FETTA cheese. My boyfriend ordered a donair as well but with just cheese and pickles and his came back with lettuce, brown tomato, some pink things that we couldn't even define and FETTA. When we told the cook about the mistake he re-read back our order and then said "Fetta cheese is what we serve, you should have known that walking past the sandwhich station. So thats what you get." and then pointed to our donairs and said "That is what you ordered, so that is what you get." He made no offer to take it back or remake it how we had actually ordered, he prettty much just said suck it up and eat it. We decided not to eat the disgusting food that they made us and told them we just wanted to pay for our drinks as the food we ordered was WRONG and we didnt even eat it. The cook then grabbed the MANAGER who once again read through the order and said " we give you what you ordered, you say cheese, you get fetta. Fetta is what you ordered." and I explained to him that we had eatten there a week before and ordered the exact same thing and didn't have fetta on my donair and he said "No, you are wrong. You did not have other cheese, you are mistaken." I argued with him saying I know what I ordered, and he said "no, when you come to resturaunt and you order cheese, YOU ASK THEM what kind of cheese they have for you." I was fuming at this point and said " NO, when you order something, THEY ASK YOU what kind of cheese you would like on your food." He then told us we were wrong and that cheese like cheddar and mozzarella were specialty cheese. What a load of junk! In the end we STILL had to pay for one donair, even though THEY messed up our order! I will NEVER eat at that place ever again! If you want good food in the NE fast, I suggest going to the Vietnamese resturaunt four doors down from this place. They have AMAZING customer service, and the food is made RIGHT.
