Downtown Canmore Restaurants Canmore : chomp!

Downtown Canmore

Although small, Canmore’s downtown offers a wide variety of dining options all within easy walking distance of each other. Main Street / 8th Street is the heart of downtown and is filled with everything from upscale dining rooms to corner cafes, from brew pubs to casual bistros. Being small does have it's advantages. Why not restaurant hop and try appetizers in one, entrees in another, and finish the evening with dessert and after dinner drinks at a third.

I unsuccessfully drove around Canmore a few times looking for this place that a friend from Ottawa told me about that has great flatbread pizzas. She didn't know the name, but Canmore isn't that big, right? This time, on my way home from a great night in Panorama, BC, I did some research and found out the name and address.

Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. appears to specialize in flatbread pizza, pasta, salads and soups. They focus on being organic and local as much as possible.

The vibe in the place is good. Your eyes immediately are attracted to the wood fire oven and the smell that it produces, as well as the colours and feel of the place, create a pleasing vibe.

The service was a little slow. It was mid afternoon on a Sunday and it was before any kind of dinner rush, but I think it was just the server might have been slightly inexperienced, although very friendly. Like most restaurants in the mountains, the servers are young kids from all over the world working just enough to pay for their skiing habits.

On to the food. For a drink without looking at the menu, I ordered a glass of iced tea. After looking at the menu, turns out the iced tea was organic tea that was sweetened with maple syrup. Lucky guess for me. While I was tempted for a big bowl of pasta I decided to stick to their speciality and get a pizza. I ordered the Apple Chicken Harvest. It had a tomato sauce, chicken and granny smith apples, onions, topped with cheese, pesto and cherry tomatoes. I was a little curious about apples on a pizza. It wasn't terrible by any means, but didn't really enhance the pizza. The pizza overall was good. I ate the whole thing without any problems, but it didn't knock my socks off. My next trip there, I'm going to go with a more tradtional pizza. That's right, I'd definitely go back. Next time you spend a day skiing at Louise or Sunshine, avoid the mid afternoon, over-priced cafeteria food and stop in Canmore for some gourmet wood fire pizza. It would be nice to be there with a group and order a bunch of different flavour and taste them all. My pizza and iced tea came to $13.50. Very reasonable considering that you are getting organic wood fired pizza and that you would pay the same for pizza from a chain a few blocks down the road. Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. definitely offers great value for your money.

The coffee mine serves Illy coffee, which I hear is popular and in high demand. I enjoyed a caramel macchiatto there one afternoon as well as a nice croissant - so tasty!

My husband and I went to Murrieta's for our anniversary a few years ago, and I still remember the excellent service. They apologized when our table wasn't quite ready at the time we had reserved it for. We only ended up waiting a few minutes, but they still gave us a free round of drinks. The food was excellent and they treated us well.

My friends and I stopped at the Paw last summer after pretty much every hike or camping trip. We believe that the Paw can do no wrong. They brew such good beer (I recommend trying their sample tray, or get the pumpkin ale if it's in season). When asked what kind of salad you want with your meal, order Granny B's roughage. There is no other way to go. I often order just a large portion of that salad and find myself daydreaming about it for weeks later. Their pulled pork sandwich is also top notch.

Communitea has all of the same qualities I love about the town of Canmore. They're green, they love nature and the earth, they love supporting the local community and arts. They have a fantastic selection of quality teas (qualiteas? sorry - I had to) and great lunches for both vegetarians and carnivores. I had the pad thai and it was amazing.

Communitea is what they profess to be: Community oriented, Environmentally conscious, reasonably quiet and has good food. The decor is a bit eclectic; there are bean bag chairs, lounge chairs and tables with pull-up chairs. It ends up looking a bit disorganized which might be the intent. The coffee is good although not the best in Canmore. Soups are very good and very generous. Parking is easy as it is off main street.

Out of the blue, we decided to make a run to Canmore and wanted to try out this quiet little corner place. Seems like it is well run and it has some nice coffee choices. I do like that they serve Intelligencia!
I had a very delicious ham & cheese panini. I didn't study the ingredients, so I was pleasantly suprised when it showed up with spinach on it. Yum!
I also tried a MAPLE latte. It wasn't my favorite, but I like the idea in such a touristy place.
