I was very hesitant to post a review - I'd almost rather keep this place to myself. I love the fact that you would never notice this place unless you were looking for it. Great cocktails and small plates to share. Atmosphere is good - and they will never pressure you to leave or order more food. You can linger for hours and feel totally comfortable.
Fantastic service

The service at Phoenix Grill is fantastic! Our water glasses were filled even before we realized they were getting a bit low. All of our food was so tasty and prepared well. Great presentation. Our server anticipated all of our needs. When my husband spilled part of his beer, James was there in a flash with some napkins and another full glass, on the house. Such great quality in all areas of this restaurant.
Quality brunch

I saw this place being renovated for months, and I eagerly awaited its opening once I could tell what it was. When I went for brunch the first time, it was fantastic. My Ricky's-loving husband also approved, and now prefers it over other diners. They have quality ingredients that are cooked and presented well. And good coffee, too. They also have a lot of options for various diets (vegetarian, celiac, etc.). And little packets of Stevia on the table instead of Splenda or some other fake sugar. Red's is a winner.
Delightful

This lovely cafe is set in a beautiful garden that overlooks the city. Great views, and even better food. The house has that historic feel to it, with cozy antique chairs by the fireplace. The ingredients in the food were fresh and high quality, which made a simple salad taste amazing. I also had some soup and a sandwich, and both were wonderful. Too bad for them that they're not very well advertised. Better for the few of us who go there!
So tasty!

The atmosphere at Sea is so cute, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. They kept our water glasses full, and they even brought over an amuse-bouche for us to try while we waited for our food. I noticed they were also very good with a family sitting nearby - cleaning up after the baby spilled water everywhere and acting happy about it, too. The food at Sea was fantastic. A bit greasy, but fish and chips are always greasy. They actually have really good salads as well, with quality ingredients.

Cobs has amazing bread. Everything I've tried of theirs (bread loaves, buns, cinnamon buns, pastries) is so yummy. The people who work there always seem to provide really good service, too. They're so friendly and helpful.
Cute and Italian

Downstairs Giuseppe's is an informal Italian smorgasbord, with a pizza station, a pasta and panini station, and an espresso station. It took me a little while to figure out where I was supposed to pay. I got a panini and salad, and then I finally saw a line of people paying at the espresso station. The food was delicious, and my friend who has been there for dinner said the upstairs area is more formal and also very good. They also have a variety of Italian items in the downstairs market for you to buy and take home.
Good Times, Mediocre Food

The drinks are good, and the service is usually pretty good. For food, expect a little less than the average pub fare. It will be on the greasy side, and pretty unoriginal. A good place to hang out and drink, but the food is just ok.
Rock the Casbah

You can take me to the Casbah anytime you want! We took my parents here for their birthdays and everyone loved their food. My husband ordered the 'Tour of Morocco', which includes an appetizer, salad, main dish, and dessert. I tasted everyone's food and it was all so good. The service was also excellent. We got very individual attention from the owner as she explained various menu items. She also washed our hands before the meal with warm rosewater. I plan to go back here all the time. The decor is lovely, and every table seems to be very private. The Casbah is now one of my favorite Calgary restaurants.

What a charming restaurant! It's the perfect place to walk around and enjoy a nice, light lunch. We ordered some delicious salads, though there were also some more hefty lunch items on the menu. Great service, great atmosphere (love the hanging flower baskets on the wraparound porch!), great food.
Best Service Ever

You will never find better service anywhere else. They were perfect. And the food was perfect, too. I had pork tenderloin that was amazing, and every course was just right. The portions were not too big, so it made the multi-course meal really enjoyable. If you're looking for a great place to splurge, you'll find amazing food here.
Peace and quiet

This charming restaurant is in a quiet neighborhood with tree-lines streets and almost no traffic. What a delight to enjoy dinner on the patio and actually have some peace and quiet, compared to noisy patios downtown or on scenic Macleod Trail. This patio is surrounded by its neighbors' green lawns and hanging flower baskets. The interior of the restaurant looked a little bit dark and dated, but the outside was lovely. We saw a server come out a couple of times throughout the meal to snip fresh herbs from the flowerbox. The food at Jacqueline's is excellent - I recommend the bruschetta. The barley risotto was also excellent. Expect to pay between $20-35 for an entree, but expect to like it a lot. Great service, too.
Pricey, but good

Caffe Rosso has higher prices than I would like to pay for my average latte and sandwich, but I did splurge there for lunch recently and really enjoyed my food. The latte was great, and the thai coconut curry soup was also excellent. If they lowered their prices, I would eat and drink there all the time.

The coffee mine serves Illy coffee, which I hear is popular and in high demand. I enjoyed a caramel macchiatto there one afternoon as well as a nice croissant - so tasty!

My husband and I went to Murrieta's for our anniversary a few years ago, and I still remember the excellent service. They apologized when our table wasn't quite ready at the time we had reserved it for. We only ended up waiting a few minutes, but they still gave us a free round of drinks. The food was excellent and they treated us well.
We all love the Paw
Jul. 10, 2010
Jul. 10, 2010

My friends and I stopped at the Paw last summer after pretty much every hike or camping trip. We believe that the Paw can do no wrong. They brew such good beer (I recommend trying their sample tray, or get the pumpkin ale if it's in season). When asked what kind of salad you want with your meal, order Granny B's roughage. There is no other way to go. I often order just a large portion of that salad and find myself daydreaming about it for weeks later. Their pulled pork sandwich is also top notch.

Communitea has all of the same qualities I love about the town of Canmore. They're green, they love nature and the earth, they love supporting the local community and arts. They have a fantastic selection of quality teas (qualiteas? sorry - I had to) and great lunches for both vegetarians and carnivores. I had the pad thai and it was amazing.

I am a big fan of tea, so it's easy for me to love Steeps. They have such a great variety to choose from, and all flavors are available hot or iced; by the cup or in a tin to take home. I had their quiche for lunch, which was also great. The decor is really classic and cozy, too.
My favorite

Of all the trendy cupcake shops throughout Calgary, Buttercream is still my favorite. They somehow get the frosting and the cake just right, while other places are just too sweet, too dense, too rich, etc. I could eat their chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting all day.
Overpriced

Jun. 24, 2010

I agree with rurulemon. I went in one day for a treat, and there were no prices posted anywhere, so I chose a mousse tart. $7!!! I have to admit it was incredible and decadent. But $7? I wish I had known. I have had one of their vanilla croissants before, and it was more affordable and still delicious.

I had the pita pizza and a Chunky Monkey. Although the pizza was pretty tasty, I felt like I could have made the same thing at home. It did have good ingredients, though, and was much healthier than those 'by the slice' places. The smoothie was good. I wish they had the option of buying smoothies without protein powder in them.
Great Empanadas
Jun. 8, 2010
Jun. 8, 2010

I have only tried the empanadas here, but they're fantastic. Not quite the same as what I tasted in Chile, but then again, these are Cuban empanadas. I love that they are made with ostrich and other unique meats. A bit spicy, which is great. The staff is friendly and great at explaining the food to you if you're not familiar with it. A great addition to the farmer's market.
Holy Martini
Jun. 8, 2010
Jun. 8, 2010

They have the best martini selection in town, but expect to pay about $9 for one. They're great if you're willing to splurge - otherwise their highballs and beers are really cheap. Awesome mac and cheese, and the perogies are worth mentioning as well. Their pizzas/flatbreads/openfaced sandwiches could be improved, though. Fun, eclectic environment.
Artful Food

The atmosphere is great at Vue. Who doesn't like looking at great art while they enjoy lunch? I recommend the lavender honey lemonade. I had the bison chorizo flatbread and loved the flavor, though it was definitely a bit too greasy. The pea shoots on top were a great flavor addition but made it tricky to eat delicately. The service was excellent, and I liked the selection on the menu. Overall a great lunch spot if you are willing to splurge just a bit.

After several visits to Purple Perk, I still have mixed feelings. I think they have excellent coffee, good service, and good atmosphere. I'm not a big fan of their prices - I feel like I've found equivalent food for cheaper elsewhere. I've had lunch there a few times and it was just okay. Their service is fast if you just want a latte, but if you order food it seems to take a very long time. They do have a great spot for sitting outside on a warm day to see and be seen. So if you feel like channeling your inner yuppie, Purple Perk is the place to go.

During Calgary's big boom, my friends and I consistently found the service at White Spot to be terrible. We stopped going there for quite a while after several disppointing experiences. Just yesterday I had lunch there after a two year break, and I was delighted to see that their service was great and my steak sandwich was excellent. Everyone who had a burger said it was delicious. I would still continue to stay away from their 'ethnic' meals, as that's never been White Spot's strong point. Stick to the burgers, steak sandwiches, and other classics, and you shouldn't be disappointed.

I ate at the Maple Leaf about 4 years ago, but I still remember how incredible the food, wine, and dessert was. They serve the classic Canadian meats such as bison, elk, and good old Alberta beef. The service was great, and I remember how much I loved the creme brulee. It's one of the pricier restaurants, but worth the splurge.

I was walking past L'Epicerie on my way to work one Friday morning when I decided to stop in and see what it was about. They surpassed my expectations with the variety of pastries, their service, and the quality. It looks like a cute spot to come for lunch too. I had a vanilla croissant, which was filled with vanilla custard. I must go back to try the pain chocolat and their fancy looking fruit tarts. It's just like a bakery you'd go to in France. Magnifique!

I really loved Royal Thai. The food was incredible (I had the green curry with tofu) and the service was great. Everyone I ate with also liked their meal. Good value and tasty food. And I like the decor too!

My husband and I ate at Phoenix Grill about 3 or 4 times when they first opened, but we came to the conclusion that we just didn't care for any of their food. We just had lunch there this weekend and were delightfully surprised to see big improvements. Everyone in our party of ten loved their food, including us. The menu is quite different than it used to be. I had the Napa Valley Salad and thought it was delicious. The service was good and friendly. Phoenix Grill has now been moved back to our list of regulars.

I really loved the food at Juan's. It was really tasty and authentic, with generous portions and yummy sides. I wish it was less expensive, but other than that, I couldn't ask for more in a Mexican place. We had really good service. I hear they have salsa dancing on the weekends, too.
Not really impressed

Nevermind that my latte tasted pretty good. My husband and I felt like we were bothering the people who worked there, and we were also surprised at the ridiculously high prices. They seemed to have a good selection of menu items, but I wouldn't want to go there for lunch considering the price. Also, signs posted around the place advertised things like, "NO FREE REFILLS" and told us not to spend too much time at our table. Seriously? They could have at least been more subtle and tactful about it. One other warning: they only take cash or check. Overall, I don't think I will give them my business again, since they clearly don't want me there.

This place has great value and it's a great place to hang out with friends. It's very large, so there seems to be enough seating, even on a Friday or Saturday night. The food was pretty tasty, and the menu is more creative than the typical pub, though all the favorites are there: shepherd's pie, beef barley soup, fish and chips, etc. I recommend.

What a great restaurant! I had the chicken bhoona with saffron rice and plain naan. Very filling and so tasty. The naan was especially good, and the chicken bhoona had great flavor. Everyone I dined with enjoyed their meal. The service was a bit slow, but the place was packed on a Friday night. I definitely recommend making reservations. Some people were waiting in line for a while, but we walked right in and got a table right away. I loved this place.

I really love their burritos - low in price but high in flavor and authenticity. I also love their flautas and other authentic mexican foods. To be honest, I've been there many times but have never had their pizza. Their Mexican food is just too good.

I like the atmosphere, and the lunch I had was really tasty. I wish they offered cheaper soup, but the large noodle soups are excellent. Things are in general a bit over priced, but otherwise it's a good lunch spot.

This hidden gem has everything I look for in a great coffee shop. I always like to support local businesses rather than nationwide chains, and Caffe Crema seems to have the same mindset. They feature local artists' work on their walls and they use a local products in their food and baked goods. Since they obviously can't use locally grown coffee beans, they do the next best thing by having a direct relationship with the farmers that grow the beans they use. My latte was great, and so was the dessert (I had some pumpkin pie and the Callebaut chocolate tart). The barista warmed up each of the treats for us and brought them to our table. They have a whole bookshelf of consignment books for sale, as well as a corner where kids can color and play. I highly recommend Caffe Crema.

I have had great experiences at Avocado. The food is always tasty, and the service is always good. It's great to sit outside if the weather is nice, even if it doesn't have great views. I recommend the Drunken Chicken burrito.

I was walking down the sidewalk one day past Chow when a guy came out of the restaurant and told me to come inside and try their food. I really didn't care for his aggressive approach, but I was in search of a hot drink so I decided to go in and try a chai latte. The entire time I was in there the guy wouldn't stop talking to me about how good their coffee and food is, and it made my entire experience unpleasant. I feel that good food and coffee can speak for itself. The chai latte I had was tasty, but it was overpriced and not worth going back for.

I really loved my lunch at Bumpy's the other day. I had a wonderful black bean soup and a great turkey panini, as well as a latte. Love the decor and atmosphere as well. I have nothing bad to say about Bumpy's. Everything about them is unique, and I mean that in the best way.

Have you been looking for the perfect place to wash your car, wash your dog, AND get sushi? Look no further than Sushi Deluxe. I thought the bubble tea was a bit pricey for what you get - not very authentic and a bit small. I plan to give its other menu items a try, though. It's a convenient place to grab food on the run, especially if you need to buy new windshield wipers while you're at it.
